Trainings for ExpandED Schools Partner Sites

ExpandED Schools provides engaging, effective professional development for schools and community organizations on the following topics:

These trainings are intended for after-school program staff members — from front line workers to supervisors of multiple ExpandED Schools programs serving elementary, middle and high schools. These workshops are offered at no charge to staff serving in our ExpandED Schools Partner Sites as a benefit of your involvement. 

If your program is not currently an ExpandED Schools Partner Site, you can still access our trainings for your staff for a nominal per-person fee or through one of our professional development packages. Register below.

2017 Summer Trainings


Staffing Solutions Series 

Is your organization looking for new and innovative ways to improve staff engagement and retention? Working with a cohort of community partner leaders and administrators, this multipart series will provide participants the opportunity to collaborate with a cohort of their peers from other after school and expanded learning providers to review best practices and utilize practical tools and strategies related to recruiting and hiring quality and qualified staff. Over the course of 4 sessions, we will explore the primary causes of staff disengagement, brainstorm strategies to improve your culture and systems, and examine what strategies are most successful for re-energizing and motivating a team. Attendees will explore strategies for purposeful recruitment and implementing hiring practices that will maximize your team’s longevity to ensure long term success!

Additional dates in the Fall and Spring. Attendees are expected to attend all 4 sessions.

Behavior Management Series: Positive Behavior Management-Foundations for Students and Staff  

Participants will explore the root causes of difficult behavior and will learn ways to proactively, safely, and effectively address difficult behavior using positive, student-centered approaches. This workshop empowers participants to consider their own roles in student misbehavior and provides concrete strategies for adults to manage their own behavior while also cultivating positive relationships with students. Participants will leave feeling re-energized to support even the most challenging students.

Lesson Planning 

Lesson planning is foundational to good instruction. New staff and veterans alike may struggle with questions around what a quality lesson plan looks like. Join us in this session as we organize content, explore methods of lesson delivery and plan actual lessons together.

Behavior Management Series: Rituals and Routines 

All great lessons rely on having as much time on task as possible. This session will focus on strategies that help after-school educators maximize the amount of time their students spend on task. Participants will review strategies for effective directions, examine the importance of structure throughout the lesson and create routines to institute in their classrooms. Participants should expect to leave the session with plans to institute routines into at least two sections of their lessons and the skills to create new routines in the future.

Behavior Management Series: Relationship Building with Youth 

The number, consistency, and intensity of positive relationships in young people’s lives are linked with a range of positive academic, social, and emotional outcomes. This workshop will evaluate the factors that lead to and best practices for nurturing sustainable, positive relationships with students. Using the Search Institute’s Developmental Relationships framework, participants will explore strategies for building, sustaining, and repairing relationships.

Behavior Management Series: Using Social Emotional Learning as Behavior Management 

Every class has “that one kid” who has difficulty controlling their body and emotions. In this interactive workshop  we will explore the brain science behind outbursts and disruptive behavior. We will also practice breathing excer, movement and meditation techniques you can use to help your students, and yourself, stay cool in any situation.

Behavior Management Series: Maintaining Consistency

Approaching behavior management with consistency and dignity is essential to building and maintaining a positive school culture and climate.  In this workshop, participants will explore strategies that will help them develop a cohesive behavior management plan for their after-school/expanded learning program.  Strategies will emphasize the importance of school-CBO partnership planning, staff development, and parent/family communication and engagement.

YouthServices 101 

In this half day training, participants will learn about the YouthServices.net database management system used to collect enrollment/attendance data for internal/external review and research purposes. Attendees will learn to utilize the system functions, manage and interpret the data to make programmatic decisions, and discover ways to accurately reflect program schedules. This training will ultimately prepare users with the necessary skills to navigate efficiently through the system and manage their program data effectively.

Arts Lesson Plans and Program Design 

The arts are an engaging and affirming activity in the expanded learning space. Developed for programs facilitating the visual arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed-media, fashion) as well as the performing arts (theater, music, dance, etc.), this workshop will show you how to take your arts activities from good to great! Participants will learn about the fundamentals of a project-based learning approach and will engage in structured planning of an arts-focused unit for use in their program. Attendees will leave with a completed unit plan and a portfolio of resources for building a sustained and meaningful arts program.

Exploring Emotional Intelligence w/ Yale RULER 

Would you like your students to be able to better control their emotions? Emotions drive learning, decision-making, creativity, relationships, and health. The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence uses the power of emotions to create a more effective and compassionate society. RULER stands for Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating emotions. In this 2-day workshop, participants will understand the components of the RULER approach to social emotional learning. They will apply the concept of the Emotional Intelligence Charter to their work with youth and adults, and practice Mood Meter and Metamoment strategies for expressing and regulating emotions. Participants will devise plans for how to incorporate emotional intelligence and RULER tools into their programs and activities to create a more emotionally mature culture.

Growth Mindset

The way in which we think about our own brains and learning can have a huge impact on our future success. When students and educators have a growth mindset, they understand that intelligence is malleable. Students focus on improvement instead of worrying about how smart they are. They work hard to develop their abilities. Individuals who have a growth mindset are shown to make significant growth, year after year, in any field when compared to their peers who have a fixed mindset. During this session, participants will understand the growth mindset and its benefits. Additionally, they’ll walk away with resources and practice strategies for encouraging a growth mindset among their students.

Coaching for Quality 

Quality coaching of both high and low performing staff has an important role in the building and sustaining of great programs and workplaces. This workshop will provide an overview of best practices and mindsets for successfully coaching staff in various contexts. Participants will learn research-based coaching frameworks, think about and practice giving concrete feedback, explore the intricacies of having difficult conversations, and design a coaching system to bring back to their site.

Beyond Attendance: High Impact Program Evaluation 

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore different types of data that can be used to inform program design and improve program quality. Participants will learn best practices in data collection, analysis, and action planning. While attendance and test-scores will be reviewed as a part of this session, the focus will be on using other data sources such as participant, parent, and staff surveys, Social Emotional Learning inventories, observation tools, and formative assessments. We will also discuss how to easily track results in the long term.

Family and Community Engagement 

Engaging families is critical to the success of the students in your program! In this workshop, participants will learn strategies for meaningfully engaging families at their program site. Featured strategies will include creating a welcoming environment, building relationships with families, communicating with families through a family newsletter, and hosting family learning nights.  Participants should expect to participate in a rich learning community and to leave with a variety of resources for increasing family engagement at their site.
